Introduction
Ilha da Queimada Grande is also known as Snake Island and is one of the most poisonous places on the planet. Situated at some distance in the southeastern coast of Brazil, at about 33 miles from there, it's inhabited by the deadly Golden Lancehead viper. The island is well often drawn between natural hazards and legends so terrifying that Snake Island draws both terror and fascination.
1. Location and Environment:
It approximately comprises 43 hectares, or 108 acres, is located off the coast of São Paulo and approximately 33 miles distant. Snake Island is covered in forest and is generally tropical--perfect for snakes. The general belief is that there are on an average 1 to 5 snakes per square meter on it, definitely among the highest in the world.
2. The Golden Lancehead Snake
The island is home to the Golden Lancehead Viper, a species that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. It has a potent venom, capable of killing prey within moments and even posing fatal danger to humans. It mostly preys on birds whose venom is adapted for swift incapacitation of the target.
3. History and Restrictions:
Approximately 11,000 years ago, during a period when the sea level's rise cut the island off from mainland Brazil, snake island became isolated. The snakes evolved during this time. Today, however, the Brazilian government has engaged in complete restriction against public access on the island simply because it is very dangerous. Licensed researchers alone have the right to visit the island to study the snakes and the ecosystem.
Conclusion
The Ilha da Queimada Grande is by no means a welcoming but enticing land of natural risk. As unpleasant as the place is, it possesses a great scientific issue. The island thus stands as an eloquent testament to nature and the critical role of endangered species conservation.
