Mount Kilimanjaro: The Majestic Peak of Africa


 Africa's tallest mountain and most iconic landmark, Mount Kilimanjaro, is situated in northern Tanzania, just south of the Kenya border, at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. Uniqueness is found in Kilimanjaro through its snow cap-in itself quite an unusual sight upon these sunny lands of Africa.


Structure of the Mountain:

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano that is composed of three distinct cones:


1. kibo-The highest and most famed peak, topped with glaciers and snow. 


2.mawenzi—A rough and jagged peak, which is the second highest. 


3. shira —Lowest and oldest among these three cones; but mostly eroded.


Trekking and tourism


The merchandise of Kilimanjaro can be tempting, especially for trekkers and adventurers from all parts of the earth. Thousands make attempts every year to reach the summit of the mountain. Its routes to the top are:


        •  machame Route


     •  marangu Route


 •  lemosha Route

They vary in difficulty, providing options for inexperienced throater climbers and experienced ones.


Flora and fauna


There are different ecosystems around the mountain, ranging from rain-forests to alpine deserts. The national park is a protected area by UNESCO where wildlife like elephants, Colobus monkees, and birds of prey can be found. The different climates of the mountain provide the backdrop for a splendid array of plants and animals.


Cultural and Historical Importance:


Kilimanjaro, for the Chagga, is of immense cultural and spiritual significance to the communities who inhabit the area around it. They consider it a holy mountain steeped in a variety of myths and legends. Unto them, Kilimanjaro is believed to be derived from either "Mountain of Greatness" of "Shining Mountain," referring to Kilimanjaro's glorious and shining nature.
